Telling stories is how we have learned for millenia. Cave paintings, Greek and Roman painted Urns and the Bayeux Tapestry are three excellent examples of early narrative illustration, and illustrations are still how people are taught all manner of things, from nursery to adulthood, learning everything from history to biology.
